Year 2 Living things and their habitats

Learning objective

I can match animals to their habitats.

Children learn what a habitat is. They match 6 different animals to their habitats in a cut-and-stick activity. They explain things that the habitats provide the animals with on the writing frames provided.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a2: identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
A habitat is where an organism lives.
An organism is a living thing.
A habitat provides everything an organism needs to survive.

Living and non-living Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A001

Learning objective

I can group things according to whether they are living or non-living.

Children look at 12 pictures. They place them into 2 groups - living and non-living. They consider what the members of each group have in common, and discuss which pictures were the hardest to group.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a1: explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive
Some things are living, or alive.
Some things are non-living, or not alive.

Alive, dead and never alive Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A002

Learning objective

I can group things according to whether they are alive, dead or have never been alive.

Children learn that some things are alive, some things are dead (used to be alive), and some things have never been alive. They look at 16 different objects and attempt to classify them as alive, dead or never alive. They discuss the differences between the groups.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a1: explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive
Some things are alive, including plants and animals.
Some things are dead, and used to be alive.
Some things have never been alive.

Adaptations Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A004

Learning objective

I can explain how some animals are adapted to their habitats.

Children read about what adaptations are. They match four animals to their habitats and discuss two adaptations that each animal has that enable them to survive in their habitat.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a2: identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
Organisms are adapted to their habitats.
An adaptation is a body feature that helps an organism to survive in its habitat.

Naming animals and plants Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A005

Learning objective

I can name common animals and plants.

Children name a variety of familiar animals and plants. They think about ways to group them.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a3: identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats
Organisms can be grouped in different ways.

Investigating micro-habitats Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A006

Learning objective

I can identify and name some plants and animals in the local area.

Children carry out a field investigation into three local micro-habitats. They predict what they might see, draw what they can see, and after the investigation compare and contrast the three micro-habitats.

  • ks1w2: observing closely, using simple equipment
  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • ks1w6: gathering and recording data to help in answering questions
  • 2a2: identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
A habitat is a place where an organism lives.
A microhabitat is a small habitat where a smaller organism lives.

Food chains Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A007

Learning objective

I can create and describe a food chain.

Children learn how to read and explain a food chain. They create four of their own food chains, each containing three organisms.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a4: describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.
Plants make their own food. They are producers.
Animals need to eat other organisms. They are consumers.
Some animals eat plants, and some animals eat other animals.
A food chain shows how organisms are eaten by other organisms.
The arrows in a food chain show how energy moves through the chain.

Food sources Worksheet

Outstanding Science Year 2 | Living things and their habitats | OS2A008

Learning objective

I can show different sources of food using a food chain.

Children read about food chains which start with a producer and end with a human being. They use pictures to create 3 food chains, with 2, 3 and 4 elements.

  • ks1w4: identifying and classifying
  • 2a4: describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.
Food chains show what different animals eat.
Plants are producers, while animals are consumers.
Herbivores are animals that eat only plants.
Carnivores are animals that only eat other animals.
Omnivores are animals that eat both animals and plants.
